Debate Over Aquarium Fishing Ban.

In the state legislature, a do-or-die moment is unfolding regarding the future of commercial aquarium fish collecting. The State House recently moved forward with a proposal for an outright ban on the trade, supported by environmental groups and the Hawaiʻi County Council. Opponents and some fishers argue for a limited permit system, citing recent reports that certain species, like the yellow tang, could be harvested sustainably. A critical public hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 31 in Kailua-Kona.
