Small-Scale Nuclear Reactors Support Energy Systems.

Greece is exploring the possibility of introducing small-scale nuclear reactors to support its energy system. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the country should evaluate whether new nuclear technologies could help meet future electricity needs and improve energy security. The idea focuses on small modular reactors (SMRs), which are smaller and more flexible than traditional nuclear plants. These reactors could potentially be used to stabilize electricity supplies and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Officials say the discussions are still at an early stage, and any nuclear project would require detailed studies, regulatory approval, and long-term planning. The proposal reflects Greece’s broader effort to diversify its energy sources while transitioning toward cleaner power generation.
