Scientific Sovereignty Africa’s First Synchrotron Beamline.
In a landmark moment for continental science, the University of Cape Town (UCT) officially launched the FAB-1 synchrotron beamline in late February 2024. This represents a major leap toward infrastructure sovereignty. Previously, African researchers had to travel to Europe, Asia, or North America to access this level of X-ray analysis. Now, they can conduct high-level research on materials science, battery technology, and pharmaceuticals on home soil. FAB-1 allows scientists to observe materials at an atomic scale. This is expected to accelerate local innovation in renewable energy and drug development, tailored specifically to African environmental and health challenges.
