Pan-African Tech Launch of The Unity Smartphone.
A coalition of Africa’s largest telecommunications giants including MTN, Vodacom, Airtel, and Ethio Telecom announced on March 5, 2026, a finalized plan to roll out a high-spec, ultra-affordable 4G smartphone priced at just $40. Currently, only one in four people in Africa owns a smartphone. This affordability coalition, supported by the GSMA (the global mobile industry body), aims to bring digital services to an additional 800 million people across the continent. To keep costs low and avoid global shipping disruptions, the groups are in talks to establish assembly plants in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa, which would further boost local manufacturing sectors.
