AU Launches 2026 as the "Year of Sustainable Water."
The African Union (AU) has officially inaugurated its theme for the year: "Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063. Launched in Addis Ababa, this initiative elevates water security to the top of the continental political agenda, responding to intensifying droughts in the Horn of Africa and floods in the south. A new strategic framework was adopted this month to promote "transboundary water cooperation," encouraging nations to share river and lake resources more equitably to prevent regional conflicts. The AU is also preparing for the Second Africa Urban Forum in April, which will focus on "climate-proofing" Africa's rapidly growing cities through smart-water infrastructure.
