Unprecedented Top General Investigated.
In a dramatic escalation of President Xi Jinping's anti-corruption drive, China's most senior serving general, Zhang Youxia, is officially under investigation. Zhang, the 75-year-old Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), is being probed for "serious violations of discipline and law." He is joined by Liu Zhenli, the Chief of Staff of the CMC’s Joint Staff Department. Zhang was widely considered one of Xi’s closest and longest-serving allies. Analysts suggest this move signals that no rank—regardless of personal loyalty—is safe as Xi seeks to ensure absolute control and "combat readiness" within the People’s Liberation Army. This follows the expulsion of several other top generals in late 2025, underscoring a persistent effort to root out graft in military procurement and training.
