Crackdown On Excessive Bride Prices.

On March 3, 2026, China’s Supreme People’s Court issued a renewed directive to local governments to strictly enforce bans on transactional betrothal gifts, known as caili. This domestic social reform aims to lower the cost of family formation to combat the country’s declining marriage and birth rates. Several provinces, including Jiangxi and Henan, have begun setting price caps on these traditional gifts and are offering subsidized group weddings to encourage more modest celebrations among young couples.
