In late February 2026, a massive military operation resulted in the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the long-time leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). While the government hailed this as a major victory for National Security, it has triggered a wave of narcobloqueos (cartel roadblocks) and retaliatory violence across western Mexico, particularly in Jalisco and Guanajuato.
