Prehistoric Skeletons Found in Tulum.

Archaeologists from the National Institute of Anthropology and History recently announced the discovery of a prehistoric human skeleton deep within a flooded cave system near Tulum. Found eight meters underwater and 200 meters into a subterranean passage, the remains are estimated to be at least 8,000 to 13,000 years old. Underwater archaeologist Octavio del Río suggests the body was an intentional funereal deposit, providing rare evidence of ritual burial practices during the last Ice Age when these caves were still dry. This is the 11th such skeleton found in the region, helping researchers map how the first inhabitants of the Yucatán Peninsula survived and navigated the limestone plains long before the rise of the Maya civilization
