Reports from the states of Veracruz and Tabasco indicate that an oil spill has been affecting coastal ecosystems for nearly two weeks. Local communities have documented chapapote (petroleum residue) coating mangroves and beaches, impacting the livelihoods of local fishermen. State authorities and Pemex have faced criticism for a slow initial response. While Pemex has recently pledged to assist in cleanup efforts, local brigades in towns like Pajapan have been forced to organize their own equipment to protect the Laguna del Ostión. Residents are calling for formal studies to determine the origin of the leak and its long-term impact on the region's biodiversity.
