Maya Train Archaeological Preservation.

As the final sections of the Tren Maya project reach completion in the Yucatan Peninsula, archaeologists have announced the discovery of a previously unknown subterranean ceremonial cave system. Unlike previous finds, this site contains remarkably preserved pottery and wall carvings that suggest a much more complex trade network existed between coastal and inland Maya cities than previously recorded. To balance tourism with preservation, the government is considering using high-resolution 3D lidar scans to create a virtual museum rather than allowing physical foot traffic into the fragile site.
