Homicide Rate Down.
The Mexican government reported that the homicide rate in 2025 reached its lowest level since 2016, falling to 17.5 per 100,000 inhabitants. President Claudia Sheinbaum attributed this 40% decline to a new security strategy focused on intelligence and coordination, moving away from the "Hugs, not bullets" approach of her predecessor. However, security experts caution that these figures may be misleading, as the number of missing persons continues to rise and there is a suspicious increase in violent deaths categorized as accidents or suicides. Despite the official optimism, violent crime remains a persistent reality in several states controlled by major cartels.
