Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill Spreads.
A massive oil spill first detected in early March has now contaminated over 600 kilometers (373 miles) of coastline, affecting seven nature reserves across the state of Veracruz. Mexican authorities confirmed this Thursday that the spill originated from a combination of an unidentified vessel and two natural seepages in the Bay of Campeche. While officials have ruled out severe environmental damage, local fishing communities in areas like Salinas and Pajapan report that the crude is poisoning their livelihoods.
