2030 Net-Zero Deforestation Goal.
The National Forestry Commission (CONAFOR) recently released the operational rules for its 2026 Sustainable Forestry Development for Wellbeing Program. The program is a cornerstone of Mexico’s ambitious roadmap to reach net-zero deforestation by 2030. A key feature of the 2026 update is its cross-cutting gender approach, which specifically allocates federal funding and decision-making power to Indigenous and Afro-Mexican women. By focusing on community-led forest management rather than top-down enforcement, Mexico is attempting to protect the 70% of its territory covered by forests while addressing deep-seated social inequalities.
