Parliamentary Move To Lift Nuclear Ban.

In a significant departure from the post-Fukushima energy strategy, Switzerland's Council of States (Upper House) voted in mid-March 2026 to lift the national ban on building new nuclear power plants. The measure passed with 26 votes in favor and 12 against. Proponents, including Energy Minister Albert Rösti, argue that renewables alone cannot meet the surging electricity demand from data centers, electric vehicles, and population growth. The proposal now heads to the National Council (Lower House). If it passes there, a nationwide referendum is almost certain, likely occurring in 2027, as environmental groups and the Green Party have already pledged to challenge the move. A recent report from energy giant Axpo suggests that building two new Generation III reactors (such as the AP1000 or EPR) could be a cost-effective path to winter energy security by 2050.
