EU and Switzerland Sign Historic "Frictionless Trade" Package.
On March 2, 2026, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Swiss President Guy Parmelin signed a broad package of agreements in Brussels, marking a new era of cooperation. The deal ensures "frictionless access" for Swiss businesses to the EU internal market of 460 million consumers, particularly in the air and land transport sectors. For the first time, Switzerland will fully participate in the EU’s internal electricity market and health mechanisms, such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, to better manage cross-border health threats. As part of the deal, Switzerland has agreed to a permanent financial contribution toward the economic and social cohesion of the Union, a move designed to stabilize long-term diplomatic relations with its largest trading partners.
