Legal Push for National Nuclear-Powered Submarine Program.

The Ministry of National Defense announced this week that it is pushing to enact a special law to support the acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines. The Ministry now categorizes the nuclear submarine program as a national strategic project, requiring a long-term budgetary commitment that bypasses standard civilian nuclear regulations. Defense giant Hanwha Ocean recently showcased its Future Submarine concept, featuring rim-driven propulsors to reduce noise and an AI-based combat management system to reduce crewing requirements. While the program aims for maritime sovereignty, officials noted that the framework is necessary to establish military-specific safety and regulatory standards for nuclear energy use at sea.
