The Physical AI And Semiconductor Surge.
Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has enacted a massive budget hike for the 2026 fiscal year, signaling a pivot toward Physical AI the integration of artificial intelligence with advanced robotics. A record ¥1.23 trillion has been earmarked for semiconductors and AI, with a specific focus on Rapidus, the state-backed venture aiming to produce 2-nanometer logic chips domestically. Unlike purely digital AI, Japan is prioritizing embodied AI to address its severe labor shortages. This includes autonomous laboratory modules in microgravity and AI-powered 3D printing platforms for production-ready mechanical designs. The funding is now part of the regular base budget rather than one-off packages, providing long-term stability for high-tech industrial fabs.
