The 2026 Shunto Wage Offensive Begins.

Japan’s labor landscape is hitting a fever pitch with the start of the Shunto (spring wage negotiations). This year is particularly critical as unions are pushing for aggressive pay hikes to counter the persistent "cost-of-living" squeeze. The Japan Federation of Aviation Industry Unions and other major labor groups officially announced on January 22 that they are seeking a pay scale hike of at least 12,000 yen (4%) per month, along with annual bonuses equivalent to five months' pay. While the Nikkei 225 stock index recently surged to record highs (surpassing 53,700 earlier today), real wages for the average worker have struggled to keep pace with inflation and the impact of recent U.S. tariffs. Prime Minister Takaichi has publicly urged "Japan Inc." to offer substantial raises to fuel a "virtuous cycle" of growth and consumption. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are warning that rising fuel and maintenance costs make such hikes difficult to sustain.
