Revitalization Of The Nakasendo Trail.

A new national initiative has been launched to preserve the historic Nakasendo, the ancient central mountain route connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. The project focuses on restoring Edo-period post towns like Magome and Tsumago, using traditional timber-framing techniques that avoid modern nails. Beyond physical restoration, the plan includes funding for young artisans to reopen traditional inns (ryokans) and lacquerware workshops. This effort aims to redistribute tourism from overcrowded urban centers to the Kiso Valley, promoting slow travel and the preservation of regional dialects and culinary traditions.
