Public Opposition Rises Over Exporting Lethal Weapons.
A new poll released, by Jiji Press reveals that 48% of Japanese citizens oppose a proposal to lift the nation’s long-standing ban on exporting lethal weapons. This comes as the ruling coalition moves to relax the Three Principles on Defense Equipment and Technology Transfer as early as this spring. The debate centers on whether Japan should allow the export of advanced fighter jets and missiles developed with international partners. While the government argues this is necessary for national security and the domestic defense industry, the survey shows that many citizens remain deeply protective of Japan’s pacifist postwar identity.
