Overhaul Of Travel Fees & Taxes.

The Japanese government has officially finalized plans for a significant increase in travel-related costs to combat "overtourism." Starting July 1, 2026, the international departure tax will triple from ¥1,000 to ¥3,000 ($20 USD). Additionally, for travelers heading to Kyoto, a new tiered lodging tax went into effect earlier this month (March 1st), ranging from ¥200 to ¥1,000 per night depending on the luxury level of the accommodation. These funds are earmarked for preserving historic districts and improving regional infrastructure.
