Nuclear Waste Proposal for Ogasawara Islands.
The Japanese government held a significant briefing today for residents of Chichijima, part of the remote Ogasawara island chain, regarding a proposal to use a nearby island for radioactive waste disposal. The Ministry of Economy and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization are considering Minamitorishima for a first-stage survey to become a final disposal site for highly radioactive waste. The meeting, attended by nearly 150 residents, saw a sharp divide. While some acknowledge the necessity of nuclear power for energy security, others expressed deep fears regarding the impact on the islands' unique natural environment and potential reputational damage to the region.
