Mission To Beam Solar Power From Space.
A major breakthrough in renewable energy is currently underway with the Ohisama satellite mission, scheduled for later in 2026. This project aims to solve Japan's land-scarcity issue by capturing solar energy in orbit and transmitting it back to Earth via microwaves. The satellite will orbit 400 km above Earth, using advanced microwave technology to target 13 antenna stations in central Japan. This is the first practical test of a concept Japan has researched since the 1980s, with the long-term goal of a 1-gigawatt orbital array. As a nation that currently imports 90% of its energy, this orbital solar initiative represents a critical step toward energy sovereignty and carbon neutrality.
