Landmark Shift To Joint Child Custody.
Japan is preparing for a historic change to its Civil Code that takes effect next week on April 1. For the first time in the country's modern history, divorcing parents will be able to choose joint custody of their children. Previously, Japan only recognized sole custody, which was granted to mothers in roughly 85% of cases. The new law allows courts to determine if joint or sole custody is in the best interest of the child, though it remains controversial in cases involving domestic conflict.
