Kyoto Hosts Global Summit on "Climate-Proofing" History.
From March 7 to 9, 2026, Kyoto served as the hub for a landmark UNESCO-led regional conference focused on protecting ancient wooden architecture from the intensifying threats of climate change. Rising humidity and extreme heatwaves in Japan are accelerating the decay of traditional washi (paper) and cypress wood used in National Treasures. Japan is leading the way in "Digital Twin" technology. For example, Eiheiji Temple in Fukui recently completed a full 3D digital structural replica. This allows architects to simulate how the building would react to a major earthquake or flood and perform "preventive surgery" on the real structure. The Japanese government has doubled its budget for the Agency for Cultural Affairs to JPY 106.2 billion, pivoting from simple "restoration" to active "disaster prevention" for its 13,000+ national assets.
