Japan Introduces Historic Joint Custody Law.

Japan has introduced a new law allowing divorced parents to share custody of their children for the first time. The change took effect this week and marks a major shift in the country’s family legal system. Previously, only one parent—usually the mother—was granted custody after divorce, often limiting the other parent’s involvement. Under the new system, parents can now choose between sole or joint custody arrangements. Supporters say the reform will benefit children by encouraging both parents to remain involved in their lives. However, critics warn that safeguards will be needed to protect families in cases involving abuse.
