The ruling coalition has successfully moved the draft fiscal 2026 budget through the House of Representatives. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is pushing for the budget’s full enactment before the current fiscal year concludes on March 31. Opposition parties have voiced strong criticism, labeling the use of a power majority to pass the bill a threat to fiscal democracy. The budget now heads to the House of Councillors (the upper chamber), where the ruling bloc lacks a majority, signaling a potentially difficult period of debate and negotiation ahead.
