Strict New Firearms Penalties.

A significant public safety measure, Senate Bill 2575, has advanced to the House Judiciary & Hawaiian Affairs Committee after passing the Senate earlier this month. The bill aims to harden Hawaii’s existing firearm regulations by increasing penalties for specific violations. The bill would elevate the penalty for possessing a firearm while under a court-ordered protective order (such as a red flag or domestic abuse order) from a misdemeanor to a Class A felony. It also establishes mandatory minimum prison terms for carrying a firearm while under the influence of a controlled substance. The bill is currently undergoing engrossment as it moves through the House, with local advocacy groups divided on whether the stricter penalties will deter crime or overly penalize non-violent offenders.
