Tools Found in the Peloponnese.
A team of researchers recently uncovered rare wooden tools in a coal mine in the central Peloponnese, dating back roughly 430,000 years. These artifacts are believed to have been crafted by Homo heidelbergensis or early Neanderthals. The most significant artifact is a 2.5-foot-long digging stick made from an alder trunk. Found waterlogged 100 feet below the surface, it is one of the oldest wooden tools ever discovered in Europe, offering a rare glimpse into the sophisticated woodworking skills of pre-modern humans.
