Smuggling Tragedy Off Crete With 22 Migrants Die At Sea.

A harrowing maritime disaster has unfolded south of Crete, leading to criminal charges against two suspected smugglers. Survivors rescued from a boat that had drifted for six days from Libya told the Greek coastguard a horrific story: as food and water ran out, 22 passengers who succumbed to exhaustion were systematically thrown overboard by the smugglers. On Saturday, March 28, two Sudanese men (aged 19 and 21) appeared before a magistrate in Heraklion. They face charges of involuntary manslaughter and illegal trafficking. This event adds to a rising death toll in the Mediterranean, which the UN says has already surpassed 600 lives in the first three months of 2026.
