Kythnos Hydrogen Island Pilot.
In a major step toward the Green Aegean initiative, the island of Kythnos has officially become the first in the Mediterranean to run on a 100% Green Hydrogen micro-grid. In 2026, the project successfully integrated offshore wind turbines with a seaside electrolysis plant, providing carbon-free electricity and heating to the entire local population. This pilot serves as a blueprint for the Decarbonizing the Cyclades project, which aims to disconnect over 30 islands from fossil-fuel-burning underwater cables by 2030, turning Greece into a global leader in maritime renewable energy.
