Greece Rejects Participation in Strait of Hormuz Operations.
On March 16, 2026, the Greek government officially clarified that it will not expand its naval presence into the Strait of Hormuz, despite mounting pressure on NATO allies to join a new maritime coalition. Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis emphasized that Greece’s maritime involvement is strictly limited to Operation Aspides, a European-led mission geographically confined to the Red Sea for protecting merchant vessels from drone and missile threats. Officials stated that Greece has "no intention of becoming embroiled in a war" and prefers a diplomatic path, calling on regional actors to respect international law and the freedom of navigation without escalating military tension. Athens remains focused on its role as a stable maritime pillar within the EU framework rather than joining broader, non-EU military coalitions in the Persian Gulf.
