Foot And Mouth Disease Outbreak.
A significant agricultural crisis emerged in mid-March following an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) on the island of Lesvos. As of March 17, 2026, several countries, including the UK, have suspended imports of Greek livestock and meat products. The Greek government has implemented strict safeguard declarations and bans on the movement of susceptible animals (such as cows, sheep, and pigs) from affected areas. This outbreak poses a temporary threat to Greece's growing agricultural export sector, which has become a more prominent engine of growth in recent years.
