Continental Road Safety Charter Enters Into Force.

After a decade of preparation, the African Road Safety Charter officially became a legally binding framework on March 12, 2026. Mozambique became the 15th nation to ratify the agreement, triggering its activation. Africa currently has the world's highest road fatality rate, with nearly 250,000 deaths annually. The Charter compels signatory governments to establish national safety agencies, enforce stricter laws on speeding and drink-driving, and improve post-crash emergency care.
